At Pharmapack in Paris last month, Schreiner MediPharm, a packaging solutions provider, introduced its new sustainable closure seals for pharmaceutical packaging.

These seals grow Schreiner MediPharm’s security solutions offerings, all of which aim to address the ongoing threats that the pharmaceutical supply chain encounters. Another element to note is that not only are they able to be environmentally friendly, but they provide tamper protection and functionality simultaneously.

The game has changed ever since the European Union (EU) Falsified Medicines Directive—a piece of legislation requiring European countries to have a system that is able to detect falsified medicines—was passed into law back in July 2011. The value of tamper-proof pharmaceutical packaging has grown exponentially since then, including security seals on secondary packaging.

Another piece of legislation, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), asks for reusable packaging, recycled materials, and waste reductions. Schreiner MediPharm’s latest seals are made of sustainable film material that has a recyclate content of up to 90%. This amount meets the PPWR goals of minimum content of post-consumer recycling material (PCR) in plastic film of 65% from 2040 onwards.

After conducting a multitude of tests, Schreiner MediPharm determined that making the switch from conventional to sustainable upper materials made of recyclates leads to a reduction of CO2 emissions by roughly 28% on film level.
