Acquisition of Walgreens Boots Alliance's wholesaling business extends ABC’s pharma manufacturing and distribution reach

Nearly five months after the initial announcement, drug wholesaler AmerisourceBergen Corporation (ABC) has officially acquired the majority of Walgreens Boots Alliance's (WBA) Alliance Healthcare businesses for $6.5 billion—$6.275 billion in cash, along with two million shares of AmerisourceBergen common stock.

“… The acquisition of Alliance Healthcare expands our reach and solutions in pharmaceutical distribution, and adds to AmerisourceBergen’s breadth and depth of global manufacturer services,” says Steven H. Collis, ABC's chairman, president and CEO. “With Alliance Healthcare, we will advance our ability to provide innovative and global healthcare solutions and further our purpose of being united in our responsibility to create healthier futures.”

In an effort to further boost growth and collaboration, ABC and WBA also plan on expanding their commercial agreements. As previously noted by Pharmaceutical Commerce, their US distribution agreement will be extended by three years until 2029, while their partnership will now include a commitment to pursue more sourcing and distribution leads. Alliance Healthcare UK will remain WBA’s distribution partner until 2031.
