Both Comirnaty, Spikevax jabs had previously been authorized for use under Interim Order

Health Canada has officially granted both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines full approval in people 12 years of age and up. The two-dose mRNA shots were both previously authorized for use under Interim Order in December 2020.

The Canadian federal institution also announced that the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines will be known by the names of Comirnaty and Spikevax respectively. AstraZeneca, whose vaccine continues to be under Interim Order, will go by the name Vaxzevria.

“Health Canada’s approval of our Covid-19 vaccine is an important milestone, as it is our first full approval for Spikevax. I would like to thank Health Canada for their hard work throughout the process,” says Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna. “I would also like to thank the government of Canada for the partnership they have built with us, and for their confidence in our mRNA platform in addressing the Covid-19 pandemic.”
