TekniPlex Healthcare, a supplier of barrier films, unit-dose containers, and more, has opened its new 200,000-square-foot facility in Madison, WI, which was made official with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week. The new site—representing its second Madison plant—acts as the flagship location for the company’s barrier protection systems business, and will strive to further grow its protective solutions services.
Supporting sterile barrier packaging and supply chain resilience
The Madison plant reinforces the TekniPlex Healthcare’s goal of assisting pharma and medical companies, which indirectly includes its downstream partners as well. This features patients, hospitals, laboratories, and outpatient surgery centers—with sterile barrier packaging that is able to safeguard medical technologies—in an effort to promote uninterrupted supply chains and faster delivery windows.
This particular facility holds an ISO 13485:2016 quality management system (QMS) certification, a testament to its QMS that’s able to target the design, development, production, and servicing of medical devices, including self-injectables. It also reestablishes TekniPlex Healthcare’s interest in safe products that meet the necessary regulatory requirements.
Essentially, the plant is expected to help boost patient outcomes by producing coated and printed solutions that are able to protect medical devices and wound care products from contaminants. This would not be possible without new manufacturing equipment, such as a state-of-the-art air knife coater, heat-seal coated reinforced papers for sterilizable barrier applications (including IV sets, procedure kits, implantable devices, and syringes).
Key Takeaways
- The company launched a new 200,000-square-foot plant in Madison, WI, to serve as its flagship site for barrier protection systems, enhancing capacity and supply chain resilience.
- Equipped with ISO 13485:2016 certification and state-of-the-art coating and printing technology, the facility will produce sterilizable packaging for medical devices, self-injectables, and wound care products.
- Under CEO Suj Mehta, TekniPlex Healthcare is prioritizing strategic expansion and materials science innovation to meet evolving pharmaceutical and medical device industry demands.
Built for expansion: Flexographic printing and slitting equipment in pipeline
Thinking ahead, the facility even allows for expansion opportunities—there are currently plans in the works for another flexographic printer, a reversible salvage rewinder, and a cantilevered slitter rewinder.
Being that TekniPlex Healthcare is indirectly involved with self-injectable devices, their prominence has brought various challenges for pharmaceutical companies to overcome, including the evolution of meds.
“Drugs of all kinds are getting smarter, resulting in growth opportunities for all types of pharmaceuticals, blending the line between pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices,” wrote Stephen Robinson, sales engineer with Coesia North America in an article2 for Pharma Commerce. “The industry is evolving, and the success of drugs in new formats is paving the way for innovation across the board.
“To keep up with this changing landscape, pharmaceutical companies must consider machines with flexible formats that can consistently be updated. Otherwise, they run the risk of becoming obsolete and facing a need for substantial investment in new equipment.”
To highlight the strategic importance of its latest expansion, TekniPlex Healthcare CEO Suj Mehta emphasized the facility’s role in advancing both innovation and patient outcomes, stating, “Our new flagship facility exemplifies TekniPlex Healthcare’s mission of improving patient care through solutions that protect, preserve, and perform. The products manufactured here directly impact patients’ lives. As a dedicated hub, the site not only expands our capacity and provides customers with supply chain assurances, but also serves as a knowledge base to build upon and maximize our leadership in barrier protection materials science.”
Mehat was named CEO of TekniPlex’s healthcare division this past February.3 He originally joined the company 16 years ago as vice president, deputy general counsel, and since that time, has been involved in shaping the company’s mergers and acquisitions strategy, providing growth initiatives and promoting innovation across the company.
“Suj’s strategic vision, collaborative leadership, and commitment to addressing healthcare needs through materials science have been instrumental in driving TekniPlex forward,” noted Brenda Chamulak, CEO and president of TekniPlex. “His ability to align strategy with execution has already had a meaningful impact, and I am confident that under his leadership TekniPlex Healthcare will continue to grow, innovate, and deliver critical solutions that support our customers and improve patient outcomes.”
