Pharma Pulse: New CDER Director Appointed, as Medicaid Shows Potential to Save Cancer Lives

In today’s Pharma Pulse, Dr. Tracy Beth Høeg is named acting CDER director amidst high leadership turnover, promising modernization and transparency.

Welcome to Pharma Pulse, a Pharmaceutical Commerce podcast where we bring you the latest insights shaping patient access, supply chain/logistics, data & tech, and healthcare innovation. I’m your host, and let’s get into today’s headlines.

  • The leadership shakeup at the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, or CDER, continues. Following Dr. Richard Pazdur announcing his plans to retire from the position, the agency has quickly appointed Dr. Tracy Beth Høeg as the acting director. Dr. Høeg, a physician and epidemiologist, steps in at a time of significant instability—she is the fifth person to hold the top CDER role this year. Commissioner Marty Makary endorsed the move, stating Dr. Høeg is the "right scientist to fully modernize CDER" and will bring a commitment to transparency and rigorous science.
  • In health policy, new data is quantifying the real-world impact of expanded insurance coverage. A cohort study examining over 53,000 patients with resectable Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, or NSCLC, found that states that expanded Medicaid saw lower mortality rates at both two- and four-years post-diagnosis. Crucially, researchers suggest this survival benefit isn't primarily from earlier cancer detection, but rather from improved access to effective post-diagnostic care and timely treatment.
  • Lastly, in R&D, new findings are clarifying a long-standing challenge for influenza vaccines. An NIH study on identical twins found that immune imprinting, sometimes called "original antigenic sin," heavily influences how individuals respond to the flu shot over their lifetime. The immune system preferentially reactivates responses to strains encountered early in life, limiting the effectiveness of newer vaccines.
