Cold Chain Consolidation Continues as Eutecma Acquires Tempaid

German cold chain packaging maker Eutecma has acquired Tempaid, a North American developer of validated thermal packaging for pharmaceutical, life sciences and healthcare shipments, the companies announced Sept. 28.¹ The deal pairs Eutecma's shipping systems and high-performance thermal covers with Tempaid's portfolio of last-mile packaging solutions, creating a single range from bulk pallet shippers to individual patient mailers.

In a press release, Tempaid founder Ryan Sanders said the company's growth required expanding geographically, driving efficiencies and building a product line covering the whole cold chain, which led it to seek a partner. Eutecma CEO Kevin Grogan, who will lead the combined company, said the two businesses are "uniquely suited to address the demanding needs of the cold chain marketplace."¹

What Does Each Company Bring to the Combination?

Eutecma builds passive systems engineered for multiple shipping cycles, including its ICECATCH cooling systems, modular PROTECT shippers and thermal covers. Through its retecma program and international refreshment centers, used packaging is refurbished or recycled.¹

Tempaid adds a parcel and last-mile line that includes SpeedyPac mailers, SteadyPac thermal shippers, gel packs and phase-change material (PCM) mats.¹ It also brings vacuum insulated panel (VIP) and PCM designs, in-house R&D, ISTA-certified thermal testing and manufacturing across North America and Asia. The companies said both brands' product and service portfolios will continue.

Why Does Pallet-to-Parcel Coverage Matter Now?

Eddie Hjerpe, principal at Great Point Partners, the Greenwich, Connecticut-based health care investment firm backing Eutecma, pointed to a shift in how refrigerated medicines move. "Temperature-sensitive medicines now travel further, more often and in smaller quantities than at any point in the industry's history, from bulk pallets leaving a manufacturer to a single dose arriving at a patient's door," he said.¹ "Very few packaging companies were built to protect that entire journey."

That shift is visible with the recent rise of GLP-1s, whose use has roughly quadrupled since 2024, increasing demand for cold chain packaging solutions in pharma logistics.² The deal also fits a broader consolidation pattern. Building a cold chain delivery process has traditionally meant lining up separate packaging, temperature-monitoring, transportation and compliance vendors. Pharmaceutical Commerce has reported a growing number of collaborations and consolidations among solutions providers.

How Does Passive Packaging Fit the Growth Picture?

Both Eutecma and Tempaid build systems that rely on insulation and phase-change materials rather than powered refrigeration, placing the combined company in the passive segment of the market.

Speaking with Pharmaceutical Commerce earlier this year, Amardeep Chalal, senior vice president of marketing and corporate development at Cold Chain Technologies, noted demand for both active and passive units is rising across the cold chain, with passive systems pulling ahead.

Market forecasts point the same way. Mordor Intelligence projects the global passive temperature-controlled packaging market will grow from $10.52 billion in 2026 to $15.75 billion by 2031, an 8.41% compound annual growth rate. Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology are projected to be the fastest-growing end-user segment, at a 9.41% compound annual growth rate.³
