Danny Williams on What the Next Five Years Hold for Pharma 3PLs

Danny Williams breaks down direct-to-patient distribution and his outlook on where pharma 3PLs are headed over the next five years.

In the third and final part of his video interview series with Pharmaceutical Commerce, Danny Williams, president of channel management and 3PL at EVERSANA, tackles how direct-to-patient shipping is reshaping 3PL operations and what the next five years look like for providers trying to keep pace with the market.

On direct-to-patient distribution, Williams draws an important line. Distributing product to a licensed facility is fundamentally different from dispensing it directly to a patient, and that distinction has real operational and regulatory weight. The latter requires a pharmacist, he says, which means 3PLs need pharmacy partnerships to make the model work. Whether a shipment is going to a specialty pharmacy, an oncology clinic, or a patient's door, the move toward individualized fulfillment represents a significant departure from traditional bulk distribution.

Williams sees patient convenience and therapy adherence as the primary forces driving that shift. Removing obstacles between a patient and their medication, whether that means bypassing a retail pharmacy or avoiding an institutional pickup, has a direct effect on whether patients stay on therapy. He acknowledges the integration required to pull that off is not always straightforward.

On the five-year outlook, Williams is clear about what will separate the 3PLs that thrive from those that don't. The providers that win will be the ones that can bring infrastructure, technology, experience, and data into a single scalable model and execute consistently. Those that can't will fall short of what manufacturers and patients need.

His closing point: the job is no longer about moving product. It is about orchestrating a complex, regulated, data-rich supply chain that gets the right therapy to the right patient, reliably and on time.
