Pharma Pulse: GoodRx Opens Employer GLP-1 Channel, Lilly Fends Off Novo Ad Challenge, PCMA Takes Aim at Wholesalers

In this week’s Pharma Pulse, GoodRx expands an employer offering built on manufacturer pricing for GLP-1 obesity drugs, a federal judge declines to block Lilly’s comparative Zepbound ads, and the PBM industry’s trade group turns the vertical integration debate toward drug wholesalers.

Welcome to Pharma Pulse, a Pharmaceutical Commerce podcast bringing you the latest insights shaping patient access, regulatory policy, and healthcare innovation. I’m your host, and let’s get into today’s headlines.

First up, GoodRx’s Employer Direct weight loss offering is now available market-wide, giving employers a configurable way to help employees access FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for weight management.1 Through the offering, employers get access to employer pricing made available by manufacturers for Wegovy, Wegovy HD, the Wegovy pill, Foundayo and the Zepbound KwikPen.

The model puts three decisions in the employer’s hands. Employers select which of those eligible GLP-1 medications to include. They set their contribution level, whether a fixed amount, a percentage or full coverage, and contributions are applied automatically when the prescription is filled, with no reimbursement step. And they can add clinical care through GoodRx for Weight Loss, though employees can also participate with a valid prescription from their own provider. The offering is designed to complement an employer’s existing health plan rather than run through it, and GoodRx says implementation can take as little as 30 days.1

The manufacturer relationships are what make the pricing possible. GoodRx collaborates with Novo Nordisk on employer pricing and is an approved independent program administrator for Lilly Employer Connect.1 Lilly launched that platform in March, making Zepbound KwikPen available to network pharmacies at $449 across all doses.2 Novo said its work with GoodRx will make Wegovy employer pricing available at retail pharmacies nationwide.1

“For many employers, the question is not whether they want to support GLP-1 access, but how to make it affordable for employees and manageable within their benefits budgets,” said Wendy Barnes, president and CEO of GoodRx, in a press release.1

Withum, which chose the offering, said it wanted to decide which medications to support and how much to contribute while keeping costs predictable.1 The expansion builds on the Employer Direct model GoodRx first introduced in February, and on a manufacturer business where Pharma Direct revenue rose 76% year over year to $61.6 million in the second quarter.3 Starting in January 2027, employers will also be able to add GoodRx Companion, the company’s generic medication and healthcare savings subscription, through Employer Direct.1

Why Did a Federal Judge Decline to Block Lilly’s GLP-1 Ads?

Next, Lilly’s comparative obesity drug ads will stay on air. On Oct. 26, US District Judge Zahid Quraishi of the District of New Jersey denied Novo Nordisk’s motion for a preliminary injunction against Lilly’s Zepbound and Mounjaro advertising.4 Novo sued in July, alleging the ads compared higher doses of Lilly’s drugs with lower doses of Wegovy and Ozempic. The court found Novo had not shown irreparable harm, noting that prescriptions for Novo’s products held steady while the ads ran from April through July. “At bottom, Novo engaged in a nearly identical advertising strategy and now complains because it is being subjected to similar conduct,” Quraishi wrote.5 The ruling does not decide whether the ads are false or misleading, and the case continues.

Are PBMs Turning the Vertical Integration Debate on Wholesalers?

Lastly, the fight over vertical integration in the drug channel has a new front, with the pharmacy benefit manager lobby now turning the argument its members have long faced on drug wholesalers. In an Oct. 27 blog post, the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA) called the wholesale market opaque and underregulated and urged policymakers to demand transparency into the practices of wholesalers and their affiliated companies.6 PCMA says McKesson, Cencora and Cardinal Health control roughly 97% of US drug distribution. It points to a string of provider-side deals, including Cencora’s pending $2.4 billion deal for American Oncology Network and its OneOncology acquisition, McKesson’s planned stake in home infusion provider Option Care Health, and Cardinal Health’s $1.9 billion Solaris Health urology deal, among others.

Wholesalers describe their business differently. According to the Healthcare Distribution Alliance’s latest Factbook, sales through traditional pharmaceutical distributors grew 11.6% in 2025 to $969 billion, but distributors operated on net profit margins of just 0.48%.7 Specialty branded drugs, the category tied to many of the provider practices wholesalers have been acquiring, now make up 40.5% of distributor sales, up from 38.5% in 2024.7 The exchange is less a policy development than a signal: the scrutiny that has followed PBMs for years is now being redirected, by PBMs themselves, toward the companies sitting one step upstream.
