Pharma Pulse: The Ember Cube 2 and a $1 Trillion Prescription Spending Projection for 2026

In this week’s Pharma Pulse, the launch of the Ember Cube 2, exclusive policy insights from Asembia AXS26, a record-breaking prescription spending outlook for 2026 and more.

Welcome to Pharma Pulse, a Pharmaceutical Commerce podcast in which we bring you the latest insights shaping patient access, supply chain logistics, and healthcare innovation.

I'm your host, and let's get into today's headlines.

First, Ember LifeSciences has announced the full commercial launch of the Ember Cube 2, a modular cold chain shipping solution that integrates real-time monitoring, GPS tracking, and cloud-based visibility to help supply chain teams proactively manage pharmaceutical shipments. The system uses vacuum insulation and proprietary organic phase change materials to protect temperature-sensitive payloads. The product also earned the "Best of the Best" distinction at the 2026 Red Dot Awards.1

Next, at the Asembia AXS26 Summit in Las Vegas, Dee Chaudhary of Clarivate outlined how converging policy forces, including the Inflation Reduction Act, Most Favored Nation pricing, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, are accelerating change across pharmaceutical pricing and access. Her core message for manufacturers: there is no longer a clean post-launch access runway, and policy-aware pricing and global launch sequencing must be integrated earlier in the product lifecycle.

In market news, US prescription drug spending is on track to surpass $1 trillion for the first time in 2026, according to the annual expenditures report from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, following a 12.7% increase in 2025 that outpaced both overall healthcare spending and the broader economy. GLP-1 medications were a dominant spending catalyst.

Next up, the FDA has approved a supplemental new drug application for lumateperone, marketed as Caplyta by Johnson and Johnson, expanding its label to include the prevention of relapse in adults with schizophrenia. The approval was supported by phase 3 data showing a 63% lower relapse risk versus placebo, with 84% of patients remaining relapse-free over a six-month period.

Lastly, TailorMed announced an expansion of its platform, moving beyond medication affordability to offer a broader suite of tools spanning the full continuum of patient support, from initial prescription access through long-term adherence. The expanded platform, called the TailorMed Medication Affordability Solutions Network, comprises five modules targeting different stakeholders and pain points in the medication journey.
