Asembia AXS26: How Drug Innovation Could Strain Access Systems

Will Shrank, MD, explains how the specialty pharma pipeline could pose access risks in the future.

In the second part of his interview with Pharmaceutical Commerce, live from Asembia AXS26 in Las Vegas, Will Shrank, MD, co-founder and CEO of Aradigm Health, discusses how the scale of emerging drug innovation could challenge traditional market access and healthcare financing models. As more high-cost therapies move through development, stakeholders are increasingly focused on how the system will absorb treatments designed for much larger patient populations.

Shrank points to the possibility of future therapies for conditions such as type 1 diabetes, wet macular degeneration, and multiple sclerosis, where eligible patient populations could exceed one million people. He notes that if these therapies reach the market with price tags exceeding $1 million per treatment, the financial impact could place significant pressure on existing healthcare financing structures.

Overall, the conversation focuses on how the growing scale of innovation may force payers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to rethink affordability, sustainability, and access models over the next several years.
