The 3PL plans to convert all its trucks to electric by 2027.
MD Logistics, a third-party logistics (3PL) provider, has added electric vehicle (EV) trucks to their cold chain transportation services available in Garner, NC, right within the state’s Research Triangle Park region.1 Adding these trucks to the fleet allows the 3PL provider to offer a sustainable, local transportation option for pharmaceutical clients within the Southeast region.
“As organizations across the globe place more of an emphasis on adopting sustainable practices aimed at emissions reduction, we are actively looking at what we can do as a service provider to not only reduce our own footprint, but also how we can help our clients with their emissions output,” said John Sell, president and CEO of MD Logistics. “We are excited to debut two EV trucks at our facility in Garner, NC and continue to customize solutions to our client’s needs.
“The addition of these two EV trucks to our network will allow our client to experience a combined reduction of more than 275 tons of CO2 emissions annually, compared to a traditional diesel counterpart. MD Logistics as an organization has a storied tenure, collaborating with our clients to bring solutions for their supply chain challenges to fruition.”
The launch of the EV trucks is being done in partnership with Nippon Express USA, its parent company. These vehicles will be used for certain customer lanes within that region—Nippon Express USA’s goal is to add 14 EV trucks to the fold by the end of this year, eventually converting all of its trucks to EVs by 2027. This will reportedly result in an 11% reduction in CO2 emissions.
“The addition of these two EV trucks will allow MD Logistics to continue to be competitive in a sustainability conscious market as a leading 3PL within the life sciences and pharmaceuticals industry.” noted Emilie Gerbers, VP of business development for MD Logistics. “Partnering with our parent company Nippon Express on the release of this initiative will allow our team to scale this solution to clients, both current and future, and develop standards and commitments as it relates to sustainability.
“Our position at MD Logistics has always been to remain flexible to respond quickly to the needs of our clients and the industry in which we operate. This strategy is in place today and is what drives us towards the future. As we field more and more inquiries for additional solutions around sustainability and helping clients decrease carbon emissions, we are excited to be offering a solution such as this one and look forward to adding more EV assets in the near future.”
